THEATER STAGE Theres a children choir standing on a stage and a small orchestra under it. The conductor comes up on the stage, stands on the conducting stand and starts conducting. CHILDREN CHOIR (singing) IT IS A GREEN HOLLOW WHERE A STREAM GURGLES CRAZILY CATCHING SILVER RAGS OF ITSELF ON THE GRASSES WHERE THE SUN SHINES FROM THE PROUD MOUNTAIN IT IS A LITTLE VALLEY BUBBLING OVER WITH LIGHT CUT TO: EXT. THE GLADE - MORNING BEGIN OPENING TITLES Its a nice fresh summer morning. The sky above is beautifully blue, like painted. We see a beer can lying on the ground. Theres a middle-sized bush right opposite the camera. We see drops of dew on the grass. The sunrays glitter in it. INTERCUT BETWEEN THE THEATER STAGE AND THE GLADE - sometimes not the intercut, just the choirs V.O. CHILDREN CHOIR (singing) A YOUNG SOLDIER, OPEN-MOUTHED, BARE-HEADED WITH THE NAPE OF HIS NECK BATHED IN COOL BLUE CRESSES SLEEPS; HE IS STRETCHED OUT ON THE GRASS, UNDER THE SKY The camera moves over the grass. CHILDREN CHOIR (V.O.) (CONTD) (singing) PALE ON HIS GREEN BED WHERE THE LIGHT FALLS LIKE RAIN HIS FEET IN THE YELLOW FLAGS, HE LIES SLEEPING. THERE ARE TWO RED HOLES IN HIS RIGHT SIDE. END OPENING TITLES FADE TO BLACK EXT. BEHIND THE STORE - DAY Its a sunny summer afternoon, slowly turning into evening. We see five cans standing on a low brick wall. There are some houses in the b.g. Then we hear a shot. None of the cans moves. The camera moves to four boys (all in the same age - about 15-17) standing opposite the wall, by some stores back door, that kind of place that is used just for supplying of the store. One of the boys is holding a gun in hands - his names BALTHAZAR MERRICK. The boys standing around him are COLE SLOCUMB, VINNIE MARSH and ARLEN CHAMBERS. They all are laughing. COLE Balt, our sharp-shooter! (beat) Youre just wasting the bullets, man! BALT Well, its not my bullets anyway. Suddenly the door behind them flings open and we see the CLERK. Hes about 50, quite beefy. His belly seems to have been filled with many beers through the years. Hes nearly bald and hes very, very upset. Boys run away, still laughing. CUT TO: EXT. LANE BETWEEN TWO BUILDINGS - CONTINUOUS ACTION Boys run through the lane between two grey houses. We can see this is kind of small town - sort of the one Stand by Me movie/novel takes place in. Theres a corner, they run round it. CUT TO: EXT. BEHIND THE CORNER - CONTINUOUS ACTION Boys stop and try to catch their breaths, hands on their knees. Balt leans his back against a tree by the side of the sidewalk. VINNIE (panting) Maybe we should find another place for shooting, what you think? COLE Not bad idea, Vinnie. He sits on the grass by the side of the sidewalk. VINNIE (to Balt) The Gun. Balt hands him the gun. Vinnie puts it under his T-shirt, behind his belt. COLE How come your old man doesnt know you got his gun? VINNIE Its Saturday - hes drunk as fuck as usual after wild Fridays. (looks at Balt) Sorry, Balt. Some people pass them by, its a man and a woman pushing the baby coach. The rest of boys sits on the grassy ground too. Nobody lives on that island, so wed be alone there. Balt sits down on the grass too. VINNIE No fishers or something like that? BALT I think no fish could survive in that water. People even dont dare to swim there. Its a desert island. ARLEN Sounds good. VINNIE Well yeah, but... will your folks give us the permission to go there? You know... BALT We dont need any permission. The boats tied to the wharf, I know where it is. Thats everything we need. Theres no need to enter the house. Cole looks at his watch. He stands up. COLE Time to go home, guys. So... STREET - SUNDOWN Balt and Arlen are walking slowly down the empty street. Its nearly empty, except a man with a dog tied on a dog-lead and bunch of kids playing soccer on the empty road. ARLEN Hey, lets try something... Whats written in Genesis, chapter 6, verse 23? BALT Nothing. Chapter 6 has only 22 verses. ARLEN OK, so Genesis chapter 6, verse... 7? Lucky number. Balt answers without any pause. BALT And the Lord said: I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. Arlen doesnt say anything for a while theyre walking on. ARLEN (smiles slightly) Sounds pretty ominous. Balt smiles back. BALT Yeah, indeed. They get to the crossroad. BALT (CONTD) So see you tomorrow, Arlen. ARLEN Okay. BALT Let the force be with you. ARLEN (smiling) Not from Bible this time? (beat) Take care. Everyone walks the other side of the crossroad. CUT TO: INT. BALTs house (ENTRANCE HALL) - NIGHT We see the front door. It opens and Balt enters. He drops the keys on the desk by the wall, closes the door and takes off his shoes. He walks forward, but suddenly his father - MR. MERRICK - appears in front of him. Hes in his late forties, with a sharp look. Hes higher than Balt. MR. MERRICK Few minutes ago I had very unpleasant call. It was Mr. Merrill, the clerk from the store down the street. Balt doesnt say anything and stands still. MR. MERRICK (CONTD) He told me something about seeing my son holding a gun and shooting cans with some friends of his. (beat) Dont you want to tell me something about it? Balt looks into his fathers eyes. BALT Is there anything to say about it? Mr. Merrick speaks slowly, coldly. MR. MERRICK So my son has turned into a vandal, thats what you want me to think? BALT We didnt destroy anything, we didnt make any harm to anyone. MR. MERRICK But its true - that you boys were shooting the cans. BALT Yeah. Mr. Merrick shakes his head. MR. MERRICK You let me down, Balt. Again. (beat) Sometimes I think Im too lenient and you abuse it. BALT Whats so bad about shooting cans? You were shooting people in war. Not much better I guess. MR. MERRICK (gets upset) Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, you little brat! BALT What an original variation of the fourth commandment. MR. MERRICK (yelling now) Go to your room now, Balthazar. AT ONCE! Balt moves the stairs up. MR. CUT TO: INT. BALTS BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS ACTION The room isnt much big. Its very simply arranged, we dont see any TV, hi-fi or anything there. Just a bed, desk and a cabinet. We can see a big wooden cross on the wall by Balts bed. Balt enters the room and lies on his bed, staring at the ceiling. CUT TO: INT. THEATER STAGE Theres a choir on the stage and an orchestra under it - the same scene like in the previous theater scene, except its not children choir this time. The conductor starts conducting and the orchestra begins to play Mozarts Requiem aeternam, the choir doesnt sing yet. The music continues through the next scenes. CUT TO: INT. BALTS BeDROOM - NIGHT Knocking on the door. Balt walks over to answer. CUT TO: INT. IN FRONT OF THE DOOR TO BALTs BEDROOM - NIGHT We see Balts father standing in front of the Balts door, holding a rod in his right hand. His look is hard. INTERCUT BETWEEN THE THEATER STAGE AND BALTS BEDROOM - sometimes not the intercut, just the choirs V.O. The choir starts singing now. CHOIR (singing) REQUIEM AETERNAM DONA EIS, DOMINE (Note: The sounds in the scenes in Balts bedroom are muffled, the music continues over them and nearly covers all the sounds.) Mr. Merrick enters. MR. MERRICK Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Balt steps back. BALT No, father... not today, please. CHOIR (singing) ET LUX PERPETUA LUCEAT EIS The woman soprano begins singing. WOMAN SOPRANO (singing) TE DECET HYMNUS, DEUS, IN SION, ET TIBI REDDETUR VOTUM IN JERUSALEM Mr. Merricks standing in front of Balt, his hand holding the rod in air. MR. MERRICK Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. He hits Balt and pushes him with his left hand so hard that Balt falls down on the floor. The woman soprano ceases to sing, the choir begins singing again now. CHOIR (singing) EXAUDI ORATIONEN MEAM, AD TE OMNIS CARE VENIET Mr. Merrick hits his son with the rod again and again, hitting his neck, body and hands. Balt is just covering his face with his hands, we can see bloody slashes on them. MR. MERRICK Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. CHOIR (singing) REQUIEM AETERNAM DONA EIS, DOMINE Mr. Merrick keeps beating Balt hard, visibly getting tired slowly, so when hes speaking, hes panting between the words. MR. MERRICK Verily I say unto you: Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. 000200000A5E00002E2FA58,CHOIR (singing) ET LUX PERPETUA LUCEAT EIS Mr. Merrick ceases to beat Balt and stands still, few feet away from the boy. His chest is moving with hard breath, his forehead all sweated, his sight aimed at Balt. Then he leaves. After he closes the door, Balt tries to crawl on the floor toward his bed. He gets there, but hes not strong enough to get up on it, so he just lies on the floor. The music stops and the choir quits singing. The conductor faces the audience that we dont see and we hear a huge applause. Conductor smiles slightly and bows to the audience. FADE TO BLACK INT. BALTs BEDROOM - MORNING Balts lying on the floor, sleeping. Suddenly we hear a cars horn. Balt opens his eyes. We hear the same sound again. Balt stands up on his feet with painful expression on his face and walks slowly heading to the window. BALTS POV - Cole, waving at him, driving a car and stopping it in front of the Merricks house. Balt opens the window, hes about to leave the room through it. He gets on the window sill. CUT TO: EXT. BALTs HOUSE - MORNING Balts hanging on the window sill, about 2 metres over ground. Then he lets go and lands on the grass. He then runs towards Coles car. He opens its doors and gets in. COLE Good jump, Superman! As theyre riding away, the front door flings open and we see Mr. Merrick, still in his nightsuit. He seems to be very upset. MR. MERRICK (yelling in the direction of the leaving car, shaking his fist at it) Just wait, you brat! Just you wait! CUT TO: INT. COLEs CAR - MORNING Coles driving, Balts sitting on the passenger seat. BALT I see the plan has changed a bit. COLE Yeah, but just a little. BALT You sure you can drive? COLE Dont worry. BALT Actually I do. COLE My brother taught me. He was a rally driver for some time. Balt smiles. BALT Good to know, really. Makes me feel much better. (beat) Guess were spared of the school for today, right? COLE (smiles) Sure. Balt uncovers the boat thats hidden in the bush near it and they all push it into the water. They get in. There are two oars inside. VINNIE Anyone of you ever paddled? Because I havent. ARLEN Me neither. I cant even swim. BALT I can paddle, its not that hard. What about you, Cole? COLE Tried it once like five years ago. VINNIE We have the winners then. CUT TO: EXT. IN THE BOAT - MIDDAY We see the island in the distance. Boys are sailing towards it. Balt and Cole are paddling, Vinnies sitting on the bow of the boat, Arlen on the stern of it, his bag laid next to him. The weather is sunny, warm. VINNIE What about Noah, Arlen? Then we hear a sound of a police horn and we see a light of the police beacon reflecting in the back glass. Cole slows down and stops, its like he just woke up from a dream. He gets out of the car. CUT TO: EXT. THE ROAD - NIGHT Theres Coles car and a police car few metres behind it. Coles leaving the car, the POLICEMAN as well. POLICEMAN Sir, return to the vehicle. Cole ignores him, closes the car door and walks towards the policeman, his hands raised high. POLICEMAN (CONTD) Im warning you sir, return to the vehicle! COLE I cant. There are some silhouettes visible under the bridge. CUT TO: INT. UNDER THE BRIDGE - DAY We see the people there. They all are obviously homeless, with old dirty clothes, some of them smiling with an alcoholic toothless smile. Many of them are holding a bottle in hand. Balts sitting here too, a little aside from the others. Hes much younger than anyone of them. The scar on his left cheek is still quite well visible. Then one of them approaches him. Hes in his mid-fifties, with nearly no tooth. His name is PERRY. He seems to be a little drunk. PERRY Hey, Billy. BALT Hi, Berry. PERRY Im Perry. BALT And Im Balt. PERRY Oh, yeah, I know... Its late night and there are neon lights on the sides of the billboard to make it visible in the dark. Suddenly somebody knocks. Balt stands up and walks to the door. Then he opens it. There are about six men in the doorway, we saw most of them in the scene under the bridge. Just Perrys not here. BALT What do you want? But before he can say anything more, they break inside. When he tries to resist, they push him away. BALT (CONTD) Hey, what you think youre doing- Then they start beating him. Theyre obviously either drunk or loaded. They all are hitting and kicking Balt. He falls down and covers his face with hands, but he cant do anything more. Then they all take him up on their hands. Balt tries to resist, but unsuccessfully. They throw him out through the window. The glass crashes and he falls down. CUT TO: EXT. HOTEL - NIGHT Balt falls on the concrete ground, broken glass all around him. We hear the roar of the homeless men above in the first floor, from which they threw him out. After some seconds he gets on his feet hardly and walks away with difficulty. Hes quaking for cold, because he has just T-shirt and jeans on. We see the little clouds of vapour coming from his mouth as he breaths. CUT TO: EXT. THE STREET - NIGHT Balt walks down the street. His face is full of bloody slashes and we see the walking is hard for him. After few metres he meets Perry, sleeping on a bench. He shakes him hard and wakes him up. THEATER STAGE We see the theater stage, but we can see just some silhouettes but nothing exact, because its dark. For a while we see the audience for a first time, sitting in the dark, silently, without move or word. Then six men in black capes light up six torches hanging on the walls. We see the properties - its a courtroom. The men leave. The judge is sitting on his place, Balts sitting on the wooden chair in front of him. Theres also the jury on the right side of the stage. The men in black capes leave the stage. JUDGE Has the jury reached its verdict? One man from the jury stands up. JUROR 1 Toss the coin! Another juror (JUROR 2) stands up and tosses the coin. With the strike, the lights die and theres nothing more than darkness again. It lasts for a long time. Then we hear the sound of a strike out of a match and then we see one candles lighted. Balts holding it in his trembling hands. We dont see much in the light of the candle, just a little more than Balts face. We can see a thin stream of blood running his face from the scar. Hes sitting on the floor, quaking for the cold heavily. Theres just darkness all around him. BALT (whispering with trembling voice) Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. We hear the sound of strong wind, but we dont see anything. Theres nothing but a wind-whizz for a long time. Then the sound stops suddenly.
